Navigating innovation for smooth sailing: A recap of SMM 2024
The Selektope team had an unforgettable experience at the SMM exhibition in Hamburg this September. The event was a whirlwind of technology, sustainability, and innovation, all aimed at enhancing efficiency in the shipping industry.
There's a special feeling that comes with boarding the ferry from Gothenburg to Kiel inanticipation of the year's biggest event. The sunlight streaming through the cabin windows as we glide into Kiel's harbour stirs up our eagerness to reunite with customers, industry allies, and friends. Stepping into the exhibition, weaving through the bustling halls, the excitement was almost tangible. The surprise of a September heatwave intensified the experience, as the high temperatures amplified the energy within the packed exhibit spaces.
As the sweat pearled up on most foreheads and suit jackets came off, a central focus of the exhibition was the conversation about equipping ships to achieve peak efficiency. A returning question posed was: What constitutes the best investment for both economic and environmental benefits? As ship owners navigate the myriad options for energy efficiency, one fact emerges unequivocally: if the vessel's hull is fouled, any investment will yield suboptimal results.
This naturally led to conversations about premium antifouling coatings. These coatings are essential for maintaining the efficiency of ships by preventing the buildup of marine organisms on hulls. For instance, it’s noteworthy that even a small infestation of barnacles on the hull can increase fuel consumption by up to 40%. The discussions on this topic were highly insightful, highlighting the importance of high-quality coatings to ensure long-term sustainability and cost-effectiveness in maritime operations.
The exhibition halls were a sight to behold, and although it was unavoidable to get lost between halls at least once or twice, you could be sure that everywhere was filled with cutting-edge technology and innovative solutions. From advanced navigation systems to eco-friendly propulsion methods, the range of products and services on display was impressive! And whether it was in a booth, on a short passing of a familiar face in the hall, or to the smell of bbq outside for a short leg rest, for us, SMM was a great opportunity to engage with industry leaders and learn about new strategies for reducing the environmental impact of maritime activities.
Despite the heat and the crowds, the energy in the halls was infectious. The industry buzz was all about the future of shipping and how technology can drive efficiency and sustainability.
The energy we gained from friends, partners, and customers was truly invigorating. The discussions about how the industry can become better—more efficient and better for the environment—by the use of our barnacle repelling antifouling technology, Selektope, were inspiring. Through collaboration, transparency, and knowledge sharing, we can all navigate the waters of change and steer the industry towards a brighter future.
